Duped!

Session 4, March 13th, 2008

Practice continued for two weeks. Phantom Fist, Black Mask, and Velocity practiced teamwork under the experienced guidance of Memonic. Of course, their practice didn't end just when Memonic had time. The three of them also usually worked at least part of Sunday. Nathan seemed particularly pleased with the physical workout sessions in the weight room after using the Training Matrix, but it seemed he did more watching than actual actual exercise. Still the other two didn't seem to mind. Beth concentrated more on aerobics and gymnastic workout since the weights there were really not enough to challenge her.

There was a crucial meeting as well with top brass in the military and the government in attendance. The concern, of course, was the new super-team that had been formed. The Air Force and Army were both represented, as well as the CIA, an advisor to the President, and of course the Hero City Chief of Police, Joan Roberts. Topics included performance, but concentrated more on jurisdiction and what might be expected of the team in the future. The Watch was happy, of course, to cooperate with the government. The goal of the Watch was also to promote peace and work actively to curb crime and everyone in the room agreed with that ideal, even if some were more cautious than others and a few had broader ideas.

Naturally, the group drew closer together over this time. Because of this, Nathan strongly felt he could not continue with the duty he'd been tasked with -- the duty levied upon him by the agents and the judge who made it a condition of his parole. Nathan came clean; he was supposed to report everything he saw about the Watch once every month. He hadn't made any reports yet, however, and he just didn't feel right about this.

The Watch was very concerned. After meeting with all that brass recently, none of them had the impression that the government had already been watching them that closely. The arrangement with the judge that Nathan had seemed fishy, so Veronica put in a call with their police contact to find out who the judge was, then sent Memo to interview him. It soon became evident that the judge had been influenced by someone and the men who'd posed as agents to Nathan while he'd been incarcerated might not have worked for the government at all.

Now the team was very concerned and began to examine everything that had happened thus far. One of the very first things was the story of how Veronica -- an orphan -- came into a sizable inheritance as well as the house after participating in an "energy drink" test. Everyone just stared at Veronica as she told her story in complete innocence.

Then we ransacked the house for bugs. They were everywhere -- lamps, walls, ceilings -- even person items of Veronica's. Very personal items... the vibrator did not survive Veronica's outrage at the violation of her privacy.

In horror, the team collected everything they had found, but they needed to call upon Ion to EMP the house to be really certain the bugs were destroyed. Also, Beth had to grimly consider moving the base. But it was at this point things moved very quickly. The police contact called, wanting to know if the Watch had anything to do with the judge's death -- he'd been found shot. Nathan discovered Veronica's very large bank accounts were being drained and managed to save one by moving its contents to his own, foreign account. And AABLE, working under Beth's instructions, managed to pick up a transmission and location thought to belong to the men responsible for this deception.

The team, unmindful of how it might look to the police, lit out with maximum speed to catch the miscreants...
