The Big City

Beth looked up from her bus schedule to the bulletin board covered with "Roommate Wanted" ads. This was her third trip to Hero City and if she didn't find a place she could live soon, the money she'd saved to make this move would run dangerously low.

A new posting, tacked right on top of the older ones caught her eye. It must have only just be tacked up there because all the little phone number tags, intended to be torn off from the bottom of the ad by prospective roommates, were still all present. Beth checked the description.

The ad was simple: Looking for fun loving person who sees the world as an adventure and does not mind junk food. If you are a lover of pink things read no further!

There was no mention of rent. Just a contact number and address.

Hm, Beth considered. Adventure and fun? That sounds interesting! And pink isn't a bad color. Beth looked left, then right. Seeing no one looking, she quickly swiped the entire ad and stuffed it into her pocket. Then she folded her hands behind her back and walked away as inconspicuously as she could, humming a little tune.

Beth checked her bus schedule again and saw a nearly direct path form the nearest bus stop here on the campus of South Penn University to the listed address. As she walked to the bus stop with high hopes, she flipped open her cell phone and tried the contact number.

"Hello?" A perky voice answered the line.

"Hi! My name is Beth Bishop and I saw your post for a roommate?" Beth said in an excited rush.

"You coming by to check the place out then? Because you should do that. I am here all afternoon..."

"Yeah, that would be great!" Beth paused. "Oh! Is this an apartment or a house? Who should I ask for at the door?"

"Huh." The voice paused for a moment. "Oh yeah, Veronica, and it is a house you can't miss it."

A two and a half story stone house awaited her as she approached from the bus stop at the end of the block. It was nestled in a small grouping of trees with plenty of land around the house.

"Wow," Beth said to herself. It was a pretty nice place and she wondered if she'd be able to afford her half of the rent. She gathered her courage, made sure her hair was in place, and marched up to the door to ring the bell.

The door opened to reveal a very attractive blonde. She was around 5'8", athletic looking build lean and toned with ample breasts without being burdening. Her hair was pulled back into a pony tail that fell below her shoulders in a full volumes waves. Her eyes were bright and green.

"Is this fate or what? I just put up an add this morning on the billboard at school, and here you are. I swear it has only been an hour, anyway I loose track of time, come in, stay a while."

Beth was a dead knockout herself. At just an inch shorter than Veronica and with thick, black hair and bright blue eyes she carried herself with confidence. Her fine features seemed perfect and every curve of her body seemed at once strong and sensual. Beth Bishop was an extraordinary beauty that was close to a movie star stepping straight out of the screen into real life -- only she didn't need the small army of wardrobe people and makeup artists to get there.

"This place is really amazing, Veronica," she said. "But I have to be honest right up front. I don't have much money. I plan on getting a job and going to night school for acting but... to be honest I'm not sure I can afford such a nice place as you have here."

"That is a pretty bold thing to say without even knowing. Hmm but I suppose if you are so certain.." Veronica seemed to never stop moving, if she did it was only momentary. " Are you certain??"

Beth blinked in confusion. "Huh? Oh. No, I said I wasn't sure."

"Well ok then." Veronica unwrapped a sucker and rolled around in her mouth removing it before speaking again. "So let's go get some lunch."

Beth made an effort to keep up with the quick-thinking girl. It was certainly the friendliest interview for roommates she'd had yet (this was her fourth in Hero City) and she certainly was hungry. Even though she'd barely stepped past the entryway, something told her this place might be ideal.

She'd packed tightly so that she could everything she needed and keep track of just one suitcase. This currently hung at her left hand, with her purse over her right shoulder, but for the moment they were forgotten.

"Food sounds good to me!" Beth said.

Once the tour was over they headed out to the nearest food place, grabbed some grub and sat down. Veronica had a super sized everything making Beth wonder how she could have a figure at all eating like that.

"This is my first year here, and I don't know anyone, that is why I want a roommate so I can have a friend so it is really important that we get along, rent of course is not as important as a good friend who is up for a little experimenting life is way too short to worry over little things like that i guess i could say 200 is really enough to cover most bills though I do not have cable and stuff liek tat so 300 and then we could have a dish and high speed internet that would be awesome so, oh yeah, I was raised by my brother okay so he is really my foster brother and our foster parents were killed and he was old enough so he kept me we are pretty close well not in distance anymore oh and the cool thing is that the house belonged to a family member a mean a real family member here I was wondering how I could ever save enough for school and then someone I never even knew existed dies and leaves me everything..."

When Veronica slowed down enough to notice, Beth was grinning.

"What?" She mumbled between gulps of her chocolate shake.

"Three hundred is more than fair," Beth said excitedly. She had figured that with such a nice, large house she probably would get her own room. As a single child who'd always had that convenience, she was glad to see she wouldn't have to share a bedroom with someone she didn't know.

Well, actually, Veronica had already taken care of the getting-to-know-her part in a quick, 20 second rush, Beth recalled.

"And careful," Beth advised with a smile, "if you drink that too fast, you'll get an ice-cream headache."

Veronica laughed."Too fast, right." She smiled and held her hand out to Beth. "I may be crazy but I like you, I think there is a future for us. What do you say hmm wanna be my roomy?"

Beth smiled and laughed, too. "Yeah! I do." She shook Veronica's hand and the deal was done.
